Community-based internet marketing: Where to begin

Given a broadband internet connection that is reasonably priced, what prevents you from  embarking on an internet marketing venture?  What is needed for you to take action on this 24/7 resource which is crying out for your consideration?

You know that the internet is here to stay; with thousands of users all over the world added to it everyday. Not only is new knowledge being generated and transmitted over the internet.  You also see evolving social networks whose communication and interaction modalities transcend political, cultural and even demographic boundaries.

The key to take action is to recognize that indeed internet marketing offers a spectrum of business opportunities not only for individuals but also for a group or community.   Any product or service can be exchanged at any time of the day or night and the only basic  infrastructure requirement is an internet connection. Given this, the possibilities are endless.

The first action steps

A complete beginner would ask: how does one go about internet marketing for the first time?   The answer is probably  the  same whether an individual or a group or a community does it.  Fortunately, the first steps are  rather straightforward, although may seem  overwhelming at first to a beginner.

Whoever the guru is that you ask, almost invariably he or she would mark the following tasks as the basic action steps towards internet marketing:

1.  Choose a domain name and register it.
2.  Create your website and choose the right, reliable web host and .
3.  Create unique content regularly that pertains to your product or service.
4.  Drive traffic to your site.
5.  Monetize.

All of the above sound simple but there are admittedly many tasks and even sub-tasks involved for each step. And a number are rather technical in nature e.g. website creation – if you begin from scratch.  But these pose no problem for a community.  These tasks can easily be distributed to the right persons who are able, if not trained to do these tasks.

Passive or active income?

Although the basic tasks are necessarily the same,  the end point is drastically different.

If you will engage in internet marketing in its classic sense, your ultimate
goal is to get as much passive income as possible.  Hence, most if not all online activities  are geared towards maximizing passive or automatic income through your website.

For a community-based internet marketing venture however,
while passive income is welcome, this may  not be the main goal.

Community Wish List: Active Income

For a community, your vision is to have busybodies who are enabled and committed to give and receive values through active interaction.
Therefore to create and disseminate values through community action, income from active interaction is your main goal.

We envision people interacting in real time and each one is receiving value through the active exchange of ideas, experiences and aspirations – as they occur.   Of course, this will operate only on the basis of mutual respect and trust since each person has a different set of norms and values.

How to find the online market that favours exchanging values through active community interaction?

The Internet:Marketing for the masses

An ICT evangelist

Many people take their internet connection for granted.  But one man has dedicated his life to promoting knowledge sharing through information and communications technology (ICT).

Since the early 1990s, Dr. Onno Purbo from Indonesia, has been telling people around the world that low-cost internet connection is possible in remote areas, especially wi-fi as an inexpensive technology.

Dissemination of practical know-how in setting up a wireless ISP, VOIP infrastructure, etc. has been the advocacy of this grass-roots ICT activist since the early days of the internet.

Purbo’s infectious enthusiasm of his mission had him invited to the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) held in Geneva in December 2003 where he gave a talk. He also made real-life demonstration using his own ICT equipment consisting of wireless access point, four-port internet telephony gateway, digital camera, webcam and a telephone handset.

His Mission

He ran Wi-Fi and VOIP simultaneously on the demo infrastructure at WSIS and convincingly showed how a functioning internet infrastructure can be built easily by a community using their own own money.  No world bank funding ; no IMF funding is necessary.

But he paid a handsome price for his being a “stubborn ICT maverick”  as described himself. A few hours after running his demo, he lost his knapsack  to a thief in the  conference. The knapsack contained all his equipment including his wallet and cell phone.

Of course, the point here is not that thieves are found everywhere.  Rather that we are impressed by Dr. Purbo’s enthusiasm, knowledge and dedication for his mission that he is willing to pay the price.

The Internet by 2015

It was then made known in the conference that one of the world’s objectives is to connect half of the world’s population by the year 2015.  As of 2006, already 16% of the world’s population have become internet users.  We don’t know however, on a country by country basis if their respective governments are on their way to achieving the goal of 50% internet connectivity by 2015.

Dr. Purbo is the author of nearly 1000 articles and close to 40 books; most are accesible on the net. Among these are tutorial files about implementing a community-based telecommunications infrastructure.

Internet marketing for the masses

Therefore, we can go a further step.  Given an inexpensive internet connection, apart from a being powerful tool for sharing knowledge, the internet is definitely a powerful tool for commerce.  But how can it be made with a bottom-up approach? A community-based internet marketing program wherein each one can contribute in building and developing a system not just for  the sake of profit but primarily for the community’s improvement?

Finally this brings us back to the first question in the first blog: how does a real beginner goes about internet marketing for the first time?   And perhaps the answer is the same whether an individual or an entire community does it.

Internet Marketing Strategies for Beginners

There was a time when the internet was still very new and not so many people have heard of what the world wide web was all about.  And there was this guy who went out of his way to tell people the power of the internet.

It basically became his mission to convince people that even in non-urban areas it is technically easy to hook up to the internet.   And once you are connected, a whole new world opens up for you. An online world unsurpassed in terms of information and communications exchange.

Today, broad-band internet connection is becoming the norm in cities of even third-world countries.  It makes us wonder what the internet guy would be telling everyone now.  He could be telling us: you should be blogging! Or he could be asking: why are you not  into internet marketing? Not only making money online but marketing your ideas online…

Internet marketing has become a quite fascinating subject to us.
It has spanned such a growing industry which for the most part, is pollution-free. No manufacturing plants. No greenhouse gases-emitting equipment that destroy the environment.  Just ideas, talents, and hard work plus the internet.

We imagine this kind of business or industry does not depend on the government or any other entity. Once you have the infrastructure called the internet, it is basically limitless.

But is there a useful strategy for a complete beginner to go into internet marketing? The kind of online marketing that provides not only residual income but a primary source of living  for the large population?
